J. C. GROENDYKE COMPANY

West Sycamore Street, Miamisburg

Modern and fully equipped in every detail, this large manufacturing establishment easily takes rank among the leading industrial enterprises of the Miami Valley, noted for the variety and prominence of its factories.  High-grade cordage and binder twine is manufactured in large quantities at the works of the factory at the above mentioned address.  To take care of the large orders that are constantly being forwarded the factory, the wheels are continually kept turning, insuring steady employment to the many skilled workmen given employment at the plant.  J. C. Groendyke, the president of the concern, is a business man from the word go.  It is largely due to his progressiveness and enterprise that the factory has reached its present formidable dimensions.  In addition, he has a pleasing personality, which has enabled him to make friends with every one with whom he comes in contact.  In all his business dealings, he has maintained a reputation for strict integrity and honesty.  The active management of the concern is left in the capable hands of A. M. Lowden, the superintendent.  He has overlooked nothing that could be done to improve the equipment and efficiency of the factory.  He is held in high esteem by all the employes and has always maintained a very fair attitude toward the cause of organized labor.  Other officials of the company are equally popular with their business associates and workmen.  Quality of the products of the Groendyke Company has long been established and the main effort of the concern is to maintain the high standard which has made the twine and cordage made in Miamisburg famous.  Location of the factory has proven very advantageous as far as transportation facilities are concerned, the factory being on the main lines of the Baltimore & Ohio and Big Four Railroads.  Water is furnished the plant in ample supply from the Great Miami River, which flows close to the plant.  Electric power is furnished from the Ohio Electric Railway Company, on which outside employes also find it convenient to go to and from work.  The main office of the J. C. Groendyke Company is located at 8 South Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois.  Situated in the great metropolis of the West, the company is in close contact with the twine and cordage situation, which enables it to get in touch with all large contracts and quote the lowest possible prices.  Enough orders are now on the books of the firm to keep it running for many months ahead.  More than 175 men are given employment at the works in Miamisburg, while a large office force is also kept steadily at work in the Chicago offices.  As has been mentioned before, the plant has been noted for the absence of labor disputes and strikes.  The consequent cooperation ensuing has been a large factor in upholding the high standard of the Groendyke products.  Miamisburg, the “Star City,” is proud of this large industrial enterprise, which has done so much to promote the growth of the prosperous city, and will always give it the support necessary to its continued growth and expansion.  Men, with the interests of organized labor at heart, can make no mistake in cooperating with this concern.

MIAMI PAPER COMPANY

West Carrollton, Ohio

The Miami Valley is generally conceded to be one of the greatest and most influential paper making districts in the country.  Up and down the great section paper manufacturing plants are to be found today, great industries that reflect on a very positive way the development of the paper trade in this part of the nation.  In looking over the list of concerns engaged in this particular line of business we do not find any of them superior in any respect to the Miami Paper Company of West Carrollton, an industry that claims the entire nation for its field, and the excellence of whose products are known far and wide, not only in the United States, but in many foreign countries as well.  It is, withal, a well ordered concern, modernly equipped in every respect and officered by as competent a lot of men as you will find in the world.  That it has been eminently successful in its chosen field, speaks more eloquently than any words we might write, of the high standing it enjoys in the marts of trade of the country.

Established six years ago the Miami Paper Company has developed in a rather remarkable manner.  It gives employment to 250 persons, all skilled in a very important branch of the paper industry.  As a concern engaged in the manufacture of paper, we question very much whether you will find, anywhere, a concern that is superior to this one.  Its capacity is 80 tons of paper per day, and W. W. Sunderland is the president.  Mr. Sunderland, it might be well to remark at this particular time, is a gentleman thoroughly schooled in the paper making business.  For many years he has followed this business, mastering every detail of the enterprise and giving the Miami Paper Company, since his identification with the company, his personal attention and interest.

The same concern is in control of the Miami Tablet Company, an industry that, in this particular line, is also an industrial leader.  This concern gives employment to 100 persons, and the character of its products has made its name identical with superiority in these lines.  The paper making business in the Miami Valley has always been an important one, commanding a great deal of attention and attracting skilled men from many sections of the country.  The paper business is a fascinating one.  During the many years of its development, new and labor-saving devices have been evolved to enhance both the character of the product and make more certain the high class product that the trade requires.  So far as keeping abreast of the times, there is no concern following any line of endeavor that has so ably met every requirement as the Miami Paper Company.  This has contributed in a very decided way to the success of this enterprise.  Square dealings with all its customers and a desire to service to the utmost of its ability have been deciding factors in the development of the Miami Paper Company.

Concerns that buy paper, very naturally want the best product they can obtain for the money.  The kind of paper you use not infrequently reflects the character of your own business, and so it is with whatever grade of paper you purchase, it is most essential that you get the best the market affords.  You want to know how your paper is made and how much skill is put into the manufacturing thereof.  We have no hesitancy, in fact we take a great deal of pleasure in recommending the Miami Paper Company.  We know that any purchase you make from this concern is going to be satisfactory, because the concern aims above all things to give SERVICE.

THE AMERICAN ROLLING MILL COMPANY

Middletown, Ohio

There is no greater industry in the Miami Valley than the American Rolling Mill Company of Middletown, generally conceded by business men the nation over to be one of the largest, most enterprising and most modernly equipped industrial plants in the United States.  The history of this industry reads like a chapter out of the book of business romance in America.  It is a monument to the faith men had in this city and this valley, and its 18 years of honorable advancement speak more eloquently than these mere words could possibly speak of the success of this gigantic enterprise.  George M. Verity is the president of the American Rolling Mill Company.  He is a man of broad experience, wide sympathy and a tender regard for the thousands of employes who are working at the huge plant.  The American Rolling Mill Company is more than simply an industry – it is a Miami Valley institution, organized and conducted along broad, humanitarian lines, and it devotes a considerable amount of its profits and energy to looking after those who are numbered among its employes.  Eighteen years ago the company was organized along modest lines with about 300 employes.  Today it has extended its area of activity in every direction, enlarged its plant from year to year, and increased its number of workmen to 5300.  These few words tell something of the popular success and progress the institution has enjoyed.  Mr. Verity has been closely identified with business and other interests in this section.  As president of the Butler County food conservation committee he devoted a great deal of his valuable time to promoting the government propaganda relating to food saving.  He went around the county personally and helped make the campaign the success it is, and was amply rewarded when the state administration took official cognizance of the work in Butler County by saying it was the best county work in behalf of food conservation done in Ohio.

In the life and development of the city of Middletown, George M. Verity has taken a leading part, and many of the improvements that have come to this community have resulted from his personal influence and direction.  He has been a recognized leader in all war movements, such as campaigns for Red Cross, Liberty Loan, and kindred subjects now of more than ordinary interest not only to this particular community, but to the nation at large.  As a man of strong convictions, intensely patriotic and deeply interested in all worthy undertakings, Mr. Verity has spared neither his own personal time, nor his personal expenses in helping to do good when he was able to.

His plant is one of the modernly equipped plants of its kind in this country.  In fact, the American Rolling Mill Company is conceded among leaders in the manufacturing world to be second to none in importance, and the reputation of its products is nation-wide.

It is both a privilege and a pleasure to record in these few lines some of the things the American Rolling Mill Company has done for the Miami Valley.  It has given employment to thousands of skilled workmen, enabled many of them to build their own homes, and provided a living wage that might be used for the support of the workingman’s family.  Its employes work under ideal working conditions and everything in the way of machinery and equipment for guarding the lives of the workmen is provided here.  It is one of those concerns that stand head and shoulders above a community, a beacon light as it were, drawing the attention of the business world to Middletown.

There are some things that enter into the manufacture of first class bicycles that must not be overlooked by the trade.  In the first place, and chiefly, the machine must stand up under the most severe test in order to meet every requirement of the public.  In such a way have the products of this well-known concern met the demands of the buyer, and we consider it a privilege for the city of Middletown to have within its corporate limits a concern so ably and conscientiously managed.  When you think of the manufactured products of the Miami Cycle and Manufacturing Company you are bound to think first of quality, then of satisfaction.
