Report to Triennial Meeting

REPORT TO TRIENNIAL MEETING, 1875.

To the stockholders of the Woodland Cemetery Association, Dayton, Ohio:

GENTLEMEN:  At the last triennial meeting of the Association it was ordered that annual meetings of the stockholders should be held, at which a full statement of the receipts and expenditures of the year should be made.  Such meetings have been held and the accounts of the Association presented and audited.  We therefore submit at this time only a detailed statement of the condition of our finances from February 1, 1874, to February 1, 1875.

At the last triennial meeting the assets of the Association, exclusive of ground, exceeded the liabilities only $238.51.  The liabilities were for land purchased.  We are glad to report that the assets, exclusive of ground and bequests, at this time exceed the liabilities $8,243.80.  Within this period we have purchased additional ground, costing $3,274.  The grounds also have been kept in better condition than ever before, which involved increased expense.

It will be necessary to purchase a few more acres of ground, and to erect a gateway, and suitable buildings at the new entrance, after which the surplus over expenses may be invested in a permanent fund; the interest of which can be devoted to the care and improvement of the grounds.  As the necessary roadways have been constructed in the most permanent manner but little expense need be incurred in keeping them in repair; and in a few years a sufficient fund will no doubt be accumulated.

We would report that we have invested the funds of the Association in accordance with the resolution adopted at the last meeting of the stockholders.

     E. W. Davies, Esq., the last member of the original Board of Trustees has deceased since the last election.  It is the best testimonial to the faithfulness with which the first Board of Trustees discharged their duties that all of them by successive re-elections were continued in office until their death.  Life’s labor done, they now sleep in honored graves in the beautiful grounds which received so much of heir thoughtful care while living.  The trustees have expressed their high appreciation of the character of Mr. Davies as a citizen, friend, and officer of the Association in a suitable memorial, which is recorded in the minutes.  To those of us who were so long associated with him in this and the other walks of life his death came as a personal bereavement.

Mr. Thomas Brown was appointed to fill the vacancy in the Board for the unexpired term of Mr. Davies.

We take pleasure in saying that Mr. John C. Cline, the superintendent, has discharged the duties of his office with faithfulness and ability.
