I have a Dayton newspaper obit of a great uncle, who died in 1871, that has his address listed as "Miami City, Ohio". The burial was at Woodland Cemetery. Anyone know anything about Miami City?

Miami City was generally the West Dayton area now known as the Wright-Dunbar district - across the Miami River around the 3rd St. bridge. Quoting an article from the National Park Service website titled "What Dreams We Have": "The area west of Dayton across the Great Miami River began to develop in the 1840s. In 1845, Herbert S. Williams platted the town of Mexico, which consisted of thirty-nine lots along Third Street west of Williams Street. New Mexico, located near the same area, was platted shortly thereafter. In 1854, George Moon and Joseph Barnett platted the town of Miami City, located south of Wolf Creek running south to the railroad. http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/daav/chap1.htm

Thanks, Modeler. The dead great-great uncle was probably living with his father (my gr-gr grandfather) who lived on Mound Street around that time. According to tax records, his house would have sat where one of Reynolds and Reynolds parking lots is now. Not sure if the great flood of '13 took house or what. Gr-gr grandfather died around 1897.

Hey mphoneton! I am east of you in Brandt. Perhaps there is another Miami City then in this county? Who knows which one the original poster meant?

Believe I'll take Modeler's answer on this one. As I said above, my dead relatives lived on Mound Street which is just across the river from downtown Dayton and would fit into Modelers description of the neighborhood. I'm sure with Ohio having the Great and Little Miami rivers, there where several areas they called "Miami City". Thanks for your replies.

It's definitely the area around what's now the Wright-Dunbar district on West Third street. I think some old maps show it as Miami City, and so do some of the city directories. I had a relative who platted some of the land around Third and Williams and ran across the "Miami City" name several years ago. I think that early on, it wasn't technically considered part of Dayton.
